Cycling the Canadian Rockies as a Family September 1 – 6, 2010. – The Maaske Family
We have traveled around the world as a family yet had not experienced our own country’s natural beauty. So what better way to challenge ourselves and get a ‘front row seat’ of God’s natural splendor then to Cycle the Icefields Parkway 230 km portion of the Canadian Rockies?
On September 1, 2010 our family (Mom & Dad, Sabrina 14, Sophia, 12, James 10 and Monique 8) set out from Summerland making the 11 hours (much longer than Google maps predicted) drive out to Jasper, Alberta. We cycled 4 days, camped 4 nights and treated ourselves to the Hostel at Lake Louise, Alberta.
In that time and distance
· we talked/moaned about sore butts,
· saw wildlife(not),
· camped and had coffee with

o and the world famous crime reporter Byron Christopher,
· hiked to the ‘toe’ of the Columbia Glacier,
· Camped, cooked, and played cards with 3 Israeli Para Troopers
· Woke up in our tent to fresh snow on the trees
The Rockies are world famous for cycling (and driving) and during our time we met an older English couple who had cycled from Orlando, Florida (I was afraid to ask where they were going), a German woman completing cycling across Canada and two brothers from Jasper were on their way to Las Vegas.
I won’t say that it was easy BUT it was well worth it. We had to persevere individually, as a family and even as fellow travellers!!
